Creating an online experience as beautiful and thought-provoking to explore as Baltic’s galleries
The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art is a dynamic institution dedicated to showcasing the work of current and emerging artists from across the globe through innovative exhibitions and activities. When we began working with Baltic, we faced an exciting challenge: to create a digital presence that would match the bold, experiential nature of their physical space.
Our mission was to bring Baltic's vibrant energy to life online, incorporating dynamic movement and animation throughout the website while working within the striking brand identity created by Founded. We needed to highlight both the ever-changing gallery spaces and Baltic's significant cultural impact, all while maintaining exceptional accessibility standards.
The project began with an extensive discovery phase, crucial for organising the wealth of content Baltic needed to share. Through collaborative discussions with the client, we recognised that each section of the website deserved equal prominence in the navigation structure. This led us to develop an innovative full-screen navigation system, accessed through a hamburger menu. While this was a bold choice, we ensured its success through strong design language, intuitive interaction patterns, and clear labeling.
This approach proved highly effective, allowing us to present nine key website sections while maintaining optimal readability and recognition. Users can now quickly access their desired content through the menu rather than scrolling through lengthy landing pages. The navigation system performs consistently across all devices, creating a seamless experience whether visitors are planning their visit or exploring Baltic's extensive programming.
The resulting website stands as a worthy digital counterpart to Baltic's architectural presence, with a particular focus on the 'What's On' page that effectively drives conversions and engagement. Through careful attention to both aesthetics and functionality, we've created a digital platform that truly captures the bold spirit of the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
